Account Opening

The procedures differ depending on what kind of identification document you have.
Use the following chart to confirm the account opening procedures required based on your circumstances.
- 1.Those employed at an office in Japan (excluding part-time workers)
- 2.Those who have resided in Japan for at least six months
*Even if you fall under the above, those who do not have a residence card or special permanent resident certificate are not eligible to apply.

Required documents by account opening method
The method of opening an account and the required documents vary depending on the issuance date and residence status on your "Residence Card," "Special Permanent Resident Certificate," "Specified Residence Card," or "Specified Special Permanent Resident Certificate."
Please refer to the details provided for each account opening method and the various PDF documents.
- *In-branch services are provided in Japanese only.
- *Customers whose residence status is "Dependent (Family Stay)", "Spouse, etc., of Japanese", or "Spouse, etc., of Permanent Resident" cannot open an account online.
If you hold a Residence Card or a Special Residence Card issued on or after June 14, 2026, and your status of residence is "Cultural Activities," "Student," "Trainee," or "Dependent (Family Stay)," you cannot open an account online.
Please complete the procedures at a branch or by postal mail.

Residence card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate
[Warning] If you change your status of residence or renew your period of stay after opening an account, you must present your updated residence card.
If TSB is unable to confirm the updated information before the expiration date of your period of stay, some or all transactions will be restricted based on the terms and conditions for deposits.

Use one of the following.
・Driver's license
・your health insurance eligibility certificate
・Personal Number Card
*When opening an account online, you will also need to complete the procedures to sign up for internet banking.

If your residence status is "Designated Activities," "Spouse or Child of Japanese National," "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident," or "Long-Term Resident" you cannot open an account online.
You will also be unable to open an account online if you hold a Residence Card or a Special Residence Card issued on or after June 14, 2026, and your status of residence is "Cultural Activities," "Student," "Trainee," or "Dependent (Family Stay)."

Please note that you may also be asked to submit additional documents such as your passport.

*In principle, non-resident foreign nationals applying for a TSB account must meet all of the following criteria
- Foreign nationals residing outside Japan
- Those who have been referred by one of our partner institutions, or those who plan to take out a loan from TSB
- Those who are able to submit valid identification documents (official ID)
- *Account opening and all transactions must be conducted face-to-face at our head office (Minato-ku, Tokyo).
- *We do not handle over-the-counter cash currency exchange, either into or from foreign currencies and Japanese yen.
